Tools For Analysing The Traffic to Other Sites

When you are considering placing links on other sites for SEO purposes you don't really have to know what sort of traffic a website gets, as all you want is the 'Link Juice' that such links provide. However, when you are thinking about placing a link on a site to gain traffic, then you need to know how popular the site is, especially if you are paying for the link.

Whilst buying links is considered a bit of a non starter for SEO purposes there are times when it may be OK (see our premium link building service), but even in these instances we don't recommend buying links just for SEO purposes, so even here you need to know the traffic that another site is getting. But just how can you find out this data?.

Three sites to use when checking on traffic levels

There are a number of sites that provide data on traffic levels, but of all of the ones we checked, these three seem the best.


Alexa

This site basically rates all the web sites in it's community by the number of times they get visited. This data is collected using the Alexa toolbar that is placed on many millions of web browers. However, as the data does not cover all web users, it cannot be said to be definitive.

What you can get is some idea of where the site is when compared with others as well as some other interesting data.

Google's Adplanner

Google has access to huge amounts of internet data and is therefore a very useful source indeed. The data provided shows the sites that people are most likely to visit, data on the traffic levels in the UK sometimes being available. Information on the demographics and income levels can sometimes be obtained. All in all a very useful site.

Biz Information

This sites real use is to give some idea as the value of a site. However, for our purposes the site also provides data on the number of page views as well as metrics on its 'Reputation' and 'Social Media' standing. Data on the visitors by Country and over various time periods are also often available.
